: f.b.i. on the ground in libya hunting those that rioted in been gadz zi. they are stepping up drone flights and sending intelligence agents to search for those suspected of killing ambassador christopher stevens and three other americans. u.s. officials say they have found no evidence pointing to a particular group or indicating the attack was planned. >>> as investigators try to close on in the killers in libya no questions are being raised at home. the white house claiming that there was no actionable intelligence, those are their words, pointing to an attack on the consulate but members of the congress saying there were multiple attacks on diplomatic attacks in benghazi and the consulate was a clear target. molly henneberg has more details from the white house. >> molly: there was an ide attack on that same consulate in benghazi in june. then the red cross in benghazi came under attack in august. they insist the 9/11 was in response to a privately made video posted on youtube in june that though found offensive. here is what part of the president said about it. >> there is no rel
units of marines fan out to these countries, fbi agents are being sent to libya to investigate the murder of the american ambassador there and degr three other americans were killed. the fbi. we think of the fbi as a domestic agency, it's the fbi that's part of the u.s. government that has the authority to investigate deaths of americans in all other parts of the world. fbi did it in the embassy bombings in kenya, in tanzania in 1998, and the "uss cole" bombing in 2000 and mumbai bombings in india in 2008 and now the fbi is investigating in libya or at least we're told they are on their way. the fbi being dispatched to libya is yet another reminder what happened in libya appears to be a different kettle of fish than what is happening at all the other embassies and u.s. sites around the world today. the attack that killed the u.s. ambassador appears to be a coordinated military assault by well-armed men who arrived at the scene quite separately from any civilian protest. given the militant groups known to operate in the area of benghazi and the types of attacks for which those g
. >> miguel marquez with the latest for us from los angeles. thank you. >>> fbi investigators are expected in libya today to investigate the attacks on the u.s. embassy. the u.s. ambassador and three other americans were killed. cnn intelligence correspondent suzanne kelly is following the developments for us from washington. what did the u.s. intelligence agencies know and when did they know it? >> it's great to look back now in retrospect and take a look at soom some of the clues that were there. one of the things they knew was that these groups were present in benghazi, they were well-organized, they have an infrastructure to them. they also knew of the presence of al qaeda sympathizers in the area, pockets of sympathizers. they also knew -- and we found this out from an intelligence source, there was an intelligence cable 48 hours before this attack took place that warned about the presence of this anti-muslim film on the internet. not only that, but that they had seen an up tick in the traffic visiting that site, that obviously this is a sign that this is gaining more popularity. cnn
that baffled authorities for years. now the f.b.i. is asking for your help in tracking down the person they say has been sending out dozens of powder filled letters claimed to be laced with anthrax. anna kooiman live in our new york news remain with hour. >> the f.b.i.'s profile of the person sending powder filled threatens letters over the last 15 years points a syracuse area man who is at least 35 years old. they believe the suspect has had significant contact with the mental health system and may have difficulty functioning independently. the f.b.i. has released two pictures of sections of the letters believe someone will recognize this handwriting. they generally start with, the paper you are now holding has been thoroughly saturated with thorax and you will soon die. they are referencing topics ranging from things like aids to abortion rights, to 9-11 conspiracy theories and the oppression of muslim. >> it may seem bizarre, somewhat unusual. they may be very disjointed thoughts, but to this person, they can be very real. they can be so extreme they may even be delusional. >> according to t
the fbi is investigating. my guess is there's no formal al qaeda connection. there are groups that are supporters, it's a shadowy group of people. they might have had some historical connections to al qaeda in the past. certainly the leader of al qaeda talked about the recent death of a kind of key al qaeda libyan leader just before this event, there might be some kind of connection. but i think it's pretty early to be making any definitive conclusio conclusions. the libyans have arrested some people. there is an interview with a libyan official who says this seems to be a deliberate attack, because not only did they attack a consulate, they also attacked a safe house. it implies some kind of penetration of the libyan security services by this group. >> and it also occurred on the 11th anniversary of 9/11. the effort to sack the u.s. embassy in cairo also occurring on the anniversary of 9/11. is that coincidental? what do you make of that? >> it's a very interesting coincidence, if it's a coincidence. the history here, wolf, is that no one was paying any attention to this vide
for possible cuts. you could see fewer fbi agents. you could see, you know, trimmed services for military families on military bases. you might have issues with scientific research that's paid for by the government. fewer food inspectors. fewer air traffic controllers. so it covers the gamut across the government. we cannot talk enough about these effects. because the more it gets talked about the more congress is going to realize that it has to work with the white house to sort this out. >> we're going to switch gears and stay with you ed as we turn to foreign policy, the handling of the middle east. the romney camp was widely criticized this week for the reaction to the incident in libya. give me the overall takeaway on how the governor handled it? >> i think if you talk to republican strategists who track this you'd certainly talk to the obama campaign and they'll say they bungled this. at the end of the week it's still not exactly clear what mitt romney thinks and what he would have done. certainly while he was sitting on this plane flying to florida on that tuesday thiet when this ha
and keep going at it. no one believes it because it's not true. >> how can he he know that? fbi teams are just arriving in libya. the investigation is underway. we know that they were armed -- the attackers at least in lib afterthe embassy were armed with rocket propelled grenades, you pick those up as you are heading toward the protest? >> you are exactly right. the white house has a handle on the intent of the attackers? they have no clue. common sense tells you it's bigger than a video. >> the problem is it goes to the rationale of the obama candidacy four years ago which was total condemnation of the bush policy. total condemnation of our position, especially in the muslim world. so the president, president obama preached empathy, preached an association based on his past and his education and based upon where he grew up and said, listen, i understand you. now the muslim world has rejected it and, in some ways, rejecting not only america but the obama presidential handout. >> that is certainly charles krauthammer's theory. he was on "special report" last night. >> this has nothing
morning, sam. we understand that a team of fbi agents has arrived in benghazi and they have begun their investigation to try to determine who was responsible for the attack on the u.s. consulate that killed ambassador stevens and three other americans. we know that they will be sifting through the rubble and ashes at the u.s. consulate and identifying individuals who may have played a role in that assault. we also understand that u.s. intelligence agent sits have deployed their assets across the country to try to pick up any intelligence that can help in that search. all indications right now according to libyan officials is this is a pre-planned attack. they have identified a few individuals. four are in custody of the libyan government. they believe these individuals may have some information that may be of value as to who is responsible for the attack. they also say they have several others under the libyan government surveillance. right now though all fingers are pointing to at least one militant group here that is closely affiliated with or at least inspired by al qaeda. that
